Finnair uses Jeppesen tool to manage crew fatigue

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., 9 June 2011. Officials at Finnair are using Jeppsen risk management tools within their Crew Management suite to develop crew schedules. Using the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM), a crew and pilot fatigue tool created by Jeppesen and Boeing, is part of the Crew Management product and enables commercial carriers to manage fatigue in the crew's roster construction and optimization phase.

"We have, as do most airlines, a fair distance still to cover in mastering crew fatigue," says Antti Aukia, Finnair vice president, Safety and Quality Management. "After collecting operational data to gain confidence in the Boeing Alertness Model, we have now integrated the model with Jeppesen's scheduling optimization capabilities, which we believe will be absolutely central for our operations. We've introduced this functionality fully within our other safety barriers and we are now able to guide our crew rosters away from fatigue from the start, based on sound scientific principles."
An Apple iPhone application also was released by Jeppesen called CrewAlert, which will be used by use by crew members, crew schedulers, scientists, and government regulators to formulate predicted levels of crew alertness. 
The Jeppesen CrewAlert mobile application, and the Jeppesen Crew Fatigue Assessment Service (CFAS) have the Boeing Alertness Model available.  For more on CFAS, visit www.jeppesen.com/cfas
