Boeing taps DRS to continue developing tactical data terminal for EA-18G electronic warfare jet

ROCKVILLE, Md., 22 Feb. 2012. Jet fighter aircraft designers at the Boeing Co., Defense, Space & Security segment in St. Louis needed a tactical terminal to enable the U.S. Navy Boeing EA-18G Growler electronic warfare jet to receive near-real-time threat, survivor, and blue-force-tracking data and present that data to the pilot. They found their solution from DRS Defense Solutions LLC in Rockville, Md.

Sikorsky to maintain, repair, and overhaul presidential VH-3D and VH-60N helicopters in $20.5 million contract

PATUXENT RIVER NAS, Md., 22 Feb. 2012. U.S. Navy aviation officials are asking helicopter designers at Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. in Stratford, Conn., to overhaul and update two VH-3D and one VH-60N executive helicopters, which are part of the Navy's VIP helicopter fleet used to transport the president and vice president of the United States, as well as other high-ranking dignitaries. Sikorsky will do the helicopter overhaul work under terms of a $20.5 million contract modification awarded Tuesday.

NASA seeks small satellite technologies, aims to increase spacecraft capabilities

WASHINGTON, 6 Feb. 2012. NASA officials overseeing the Edison Small Satellite Demonstration Program have issued a broad agency announcement (BAA) seeking low-cost, flight demonstration proposals for small satellite technology. The solicitation is limited to demonstrations of communications systems for small satellites, proximity operations with small satellites, and propulsion systems for CubeSat-scale satellites. The goal is to increase the technical capabilities and range of uses for the emerging category of spacecraft.

Scientists test private optical space telescope to be launched to the Moon, deliver astronomical images from the lunar surface

WAIMEA, Hawaii, 21 Dec. 2011. The International Lunar Observatory Association (ILOA), led by Steve Durst, continues to advance toward its goal of placing an astronomical observatory on the Moon by 2014 designed to capture never-before-seen images of the galaxy, stars, Moon, and Earth. The association completed a global demonstration of the International Lunar Observatory precursor instrument (ILO-X) on the Summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, hosted by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). During the demonstration, science teams from around the world accessed the instrument via the Internet and operated it as if it were on the Moon.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, now traveling through the Asia-Pacific region in the third segment of its worldwide Dream Tour, sports the Brake Control and Antiskid System from Crane Aerospace & Electronics in Lynnwood, Wa. Crane’s Brake Control and Monitoring System on the 787 combines the company’s brake control and antiskid technologies, SmartStem wireless tire pressure sensing, and brake temperature monitoring into a single system.

BOC Aviation selects Rockwell Collins avionics—including communications, navigation, threat detection--for up to 30 new Airbus A320s

SINGAPORE, 17 Feb. 2012. BOC Aviation executives have selected Rockwell Collins avionics, including the company’s WXR-2100 MultiScan Threat Detection System and GLU-925 Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR), to serve as the baseline for up to 30 new Airbus A320 aircraft, deliveries of which begin this year. The chosen Rockwell Collins baseline avionics package also includes Automatic Direction Finder, Distance Measuring Equipment, High Speed Data Radio, a Very High Frequency Transceiver, and Omnidirectional Radio.
