Lion Air commits to purchase up to 380 Boeing 737 MAX, 737 ER airplanes, potentially worth $35 billion

Officials at Jakarta-based Lion Air have committed to order 201 Boeing 737 MAX and 29 Next-Generation 737-900 ER (extended range) airplanes, with the purchase rights for an additional 150 aircraft, from Boeing (NYSE:BA). This agreement, when finalized, will become the largest commercial airplane order in Boeing's history by dollar volume and total number of airplanes: totaling 230 airplanes at a list price of $21.7 billion. An additional 150 airplanes are valued at more than $14 billion, at list prices. Boeing and Lion Air officials are finalizing details of the agreement.

(NYSE:BA) Commercial Airplanes segment in Seattle announced deals today worth $24.1 billion to sell as many as 380 versions of the company's 737 single-aisle jetliner, and eight 777-300ER extended-range widebody twin-engine jetliners. These purchases were announced during this week's Dubai Air Show in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Lion Air in Jakarta, Indonesia, is buying 201 of Boeing's future 737 MAX fuel-efficient passenger jetliners and 29 next-generation 737-900ER extended range aircraft in a deal worth $21.7 billion, and Singapore Airlines in Singapore is buying eight 777-300ER passenger jets in a deal worth $2.4 billion, Boeing officials say.

Qatar Airways adopts Boeing Electronic Flight Folder to transmit day-of-flight data directly to Boeing 777 electronic flight bag

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, 17 Nov. 2011. Qatar Airways engineers will install the new Electronic Flight Folder (EFF) from Boeing (NYSE:BA) on the company’s current fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft, as well as its future Boeing 787 fleet. The addition enables transmission of day-of-flight data, including flight plans and weather information, directly to the airplane’s electronic flight bag (EFB). Qatar Airways officials expect the carrier to begin using the EFF in 2012.

Boeing projects $450 billion demand for 2,520 new airplanes in Middle East over next 20 years

Executives at The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) forecast that Middle Eastern airlines will require roughly 2,520 airplanes, with a total value of $450 billion, by 2030. The Middle East's passenger airplane fleet is expected to grow from a current fleet of 1,040 airplanes to a projected 2,710 airplanes, for an increase of 160 percent. Thirty-four percent of the projected demand will be for airplanes to replace current aircraft; 66 percent will be for fleet expansion, as the region's airlines gear up for significant growth over the next two decades. 

Emirates buys 50 Boeing 777-300ER widebody passenger jets in Boeing's largest-ever single aircraft order

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, 13 Nov. 2011. The Boeing (NYSE:BA) Co. Commercial Airplanes segment in Seattle is selling 50 777-300ER extended-range twin-engine jumbo jets to Dubai-based Emirates Airline, plus options for an additional 20 of the widebody commercial jetliner in an $18 billion deal announced today at the Dubai Air Show, which is the single largest commercial airplane order in Boeing's history by dollar value, Boeing officials say.

Boeing chooses engine size for fuel-efficient 737 MAX; orders for company's newest jet exceed 600

SEATTLE, 6 Nov. 2011. Designers of Boeing's newest passenger jetliner, the fuel-efficient 737 MAX, are choosing a 68-inch fan diameter for the new aircraft's engine that will provide efficient fuel burn and operating costs for the single-aisle passenger jet, which is scheduled to enter service in 2017 as a direct competitor to the rival Airbus A320neo. Meanwhile, the Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA) Commercial Airplanes segment in Seattle has taken more than 600 order commitments for the future 737 MAX from eight airlines.

World Airways, North American Airlines commit to U.S. military charter airlift services

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga., 5 Nov. 2011. Officials at World Airways Inc. and North American Airlines Inc., subsidiaries of Global Aviation Holdings Inc. and organizing members of the Alliance Team, have entered into an agreement with American Airlines Inc. and US Airways Inc. The airlines agree to commit eligible aircraft to the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) program, in exchange for which the Alliance Team receives entitlement to operate military charters, under the fiscal year 2013 charter airlift services contract from the U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), which also has an expected option year for fiscal 2014.

Boeing Delivers first 747-8 Freighter delivered to Atlas Air and British Airways

EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 5, 2011. Boeing (NYSE: BA) celebrated the delivery flight of the first 747-8 Freighter for Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. The delivery is the first of nine 747-8 Freighters Atlas Air has on order. Atlas Air's 49 percent subsidiary, Global Supply Systems (GSS), will operate the new freighter for British Airways World Cargo through a five-year wet-lease agreement.

Market news: airline ancillary revenue soars to $32.5 billion worldwide in 2011

SHOREWOOD, Wis., 23 Oct. 2011. The International Air Transport Association officials revealed their industry outlook for the year, in which they predict the industry to achieve $4 billion in annual profit, carriers to spend $10 billion more on jet fuel this year vs. last year, and the airline industry to have generated $32.5 billion in ancillary revenue. This ancillary revenue has saved the industry from a loss-making position and continues to provide a hedge against runaway fuel bills, says a spokesperson.

The TASE400 electro-optical sensor suite includes mid-wave infrared camera with continuous zoom from a 20- to a 2-degree field of view, a 36 times zoom daylight camera, and stability with fiber optic gyros and advanced stabilization. The gimbal comes with a third payload bay for options such as laser rangefinder, laser pointer, or laser designator.

Boeing predicts $200 billion market for 1,250 new airplanes in northeast Asia

SEOUL, Oct. 18, 2011. Boeing [NYSE: BA] projects 1,250 new airplanes will be delivered to Northeast Asian carriers valued at approximately US $200 billion over the next 20 years.

NASA, Virgin Galactic sign agreement for research missions, carry technology payloads on SpaceShipTwo

They placed an order for up to three charter flights on Virgin Galactic’s privately-built spacecraft to provide researchers access to space. The contract will enable engineers, technologists, and scientific researchers to conduct cutting-edge experiments in suborbital space. The agreement calls for NASA to charter a full flight from Virgin Galactic, which is being called the world's first commercial spaceline. With this contract, Virgin Galactic extends beyond the realm of space tourism, for which it has collected more than $58 million in deposits from 455 future tourist astronauts.

Advanced version of Fury unmanned aerial system achieves 14-hour flight duration, breaks breaks 100 total hour flight time

This runway-independent UAS offers a large payload capacity (weight and volume), heavy-fuel propulsion system, high power-to-payload, and "special mission"-capable avionics. MONTREAL, 6 Oct. 2011. Boeing forecasts that air carriers in North america will order 7,530 new airplanes worth a total of $760 billion over the next 20 years. Boeing expects the total number of airplanes in North America to increase by over a thousand by 2030. Demand in the United States and Canada will focus primarily on single-aisle jetliners. This is driven by the need to replace aging airplanes with new, more fuel-efficient airplanes. For the purposes of the Boeing forecast, the North America market consists of the U.S. and Canada. Mexico is included in the forecast for Latin America.

 

Ethiopian Airlines orders Boeing 777 twin-engine freighters to replace existing fleet, meet increased cargo demand in Africa

The long-range, twin-engine freighter is based on the advanced 777-200LR passenger airplane, can fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a full payload of 225,200 pounds (102 metric tons), and boasts a high cargo density and 10-foot (3.1-meter) interior height.

F-35 program achieves static structural testing milestone, concluding two years of testing by Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, Joint Program Office engineers

Engineers at Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, and the Joint Program Office have concluded more than two years of static structural testing of Lockheed Martin's (NYSE:LMT) F-35, and done so ahead of schedule. Completion of this testing, which helps verify the structural integrity of the airframe, marks the achievement of one of five milestones established by the Joint Program Office for 2011. The process also helps to ensure specifications outlined in technical drawings that were used to produce the aircraft are accurate, as well as employs simulation techniques and tools. External loads designed to mimic the pressures of full envelope flight conditions are applied to hundreds of points on the airframe using an integrated system of load pads, hydraulic actuators, air pressurization mechanisms and reaction channels.

Bombardier to cut back production of its Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) due to dwindling orders

MONTREAL 20 Sept. 2011. Regional jet manufacturer Bombardier in Montreal will cut back production of its Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) next year because of fewer orders than expected, company officials announced today. The company did not release specific numbers indicating the degree by which they will reduce CRJ production in 2012. The CRJ is a family of regional jets seating from 60 to 99 passengers designed for relatively short-haul flights from hub airports.

Boeing officials forecast for commercial passenger airplane demand in China

Officials at The Boeing (NYSE:BA) Company presented an outlook on China's commercial airplane market through 2030predict that China will require 5,000 new commercial passenger airplanes, with an estimated value of $600 billion, over the next two decades. They further forecast that small and intermediate twin-aisles, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777, will constitute more than 40 percent of the market in value and 1,040 deliveries. 

Boeing steps up to Airbus challenge, introduces 737 MAX narrow body to answer Airbus introduction of A320neo

SEATTLE, 31 Aug. 2011. The Boeing Co. Commercial Airplanes segment in Seattle is launching a new-engine, fuel-efficient variant of the company's venerable 737 narrow-body passenger jet called the 737 MAX, in a direct response to the launch last December of the A320neo narrow-body jetliner by archrival Airbus in Toulouse, France. The A320neo stands for new engine option. The board of directors of Boeing (NYSE: BA) approved launch of the re-engined 737, which was announced Tuesday. The new 737s will have LEAP-1B engines from CFM International.

World Surveillance Group Argus One UAV damaged during demonstration, approved for tethered flights and free flight testing

The Argus One airship passed the physical inspection and analysis conducted by the flight safety board at the Yuma proving ground facility in Yuma, Ariz., according to officials at World Surveillance Group Inc. (OTCBB:WSGI), a developer of lighter-than-air unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and related technologies. The safety board has approved the Argus One airship and accompanying onboard systems not only for tethered flights, but also free flight tests.
