Rugged convection- and conduction-cooled small ATR chassis introduced by X-ES for avionics and vetronics

(X-ES) in Middleton, Wis., is introducing the XPand6000 rugged air transport rack (ATR) embedded computing chassis for aircraft and ground vehicles -- especially small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The chassis measures 4.88 by 1.9 by 7.7 inches and weighs less than 4.5 pounds populated, company officials say. The XPand6000 chassis uses three types of industry-standard commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components: rugged COM Express modules, PMC/XMC modules, and solid-state storage.

Paris Air Show wrapup: green is the theme, market returns to strength, Airbus tops Boeing in airplane orders

PARIS, 23 June 2011. The 2011 edition of the Paris Air Show kicked off with an environmental theme most notably Boeing flying to the show using Honeywell bio-fuel and the new solar aircraft -- Solar Impulse -- making visits to Paris. However, as the real spirit of the show was a commercial aviation market continuing its recovery from the economic doldrums of the global recession.

Bombardier inks deals to sell 36 jetliners and passenger jets this week at Paris, options on 26 more

PARIS, 22 June 2011. Bombardier Aerospace in Montreal, the Canadian designer of small passenger and business jets, has received orders for 36 commercial and business jet aircraft this week, as well as options and purchase rights for another 26 aircraft, at the Paris Air show in Le Bourget, France. Aircraft involved in the sales are the Global 7000 and Global 8000 business jets, the CSeries passenger jetliner.

 

DO-260B capability demonstrated by ACSS to FAA

PARIS, 22 June 2011. Officials at ACSS completed a DO-260B (TSO c166b) flight test for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials to demonstrate the company's XS-950 Mode S transponder's compliance with the FAA's Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) mandate for the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).

PARIS AIR SHOW REPORT BLOG: 17 June 2011. Expectations for the Paris Air Show next week are positive as the market returns from its doldrums of the last couple years.  The mood at the Paris Air Show two years ago was bit gloomy as the Air France crash over the Atlantic was still fresh and the small number of airplane order announcements at the show didn't help improve the mood much.

SINGAPORE, 13 June 2011. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Montreal is proposing an airport passenger security screening checkpoint of the future that would shorten lines and waiting times at major airports by sorting passengers into three levels of risk and giving expedited screening to passengers who register and complete government background checks. IATA's mockup checkpoint of the future is intended to enhance security, shorten lines, and reduce intrusive searches at airports using intelligence-driven risk-based measures, IATA officials say.

Aviation data recorders trending smaller with greater networking capability

Designers of aviation data recorders for military and commercial aviation say the devices are trending toward improved networking capability and smaller sizes with in a market that continues to offer opportunities. Security -- especially in military flight recorders -- is becoming high priority as well with information assurance requirements being implemented even for unclassified data.

Commercial avionics spending to increase over next decade, says Frost & Sullivan analyst

LONDON, 9 June 2011. Avionics market analysts at Frost & Sullivan  say the commercial avionics world is starting to rebound from the economic downturn as they see an increase in aircraft deliveries and new aircraft programs getting traction, which should have a strong impact on the air transport market. 

Airline profits to drop by 78 percent this year; North American airline profits to drop by 70 percent, IATA says

GENEVA, 6 June 2011. Commercial airlines throughout the world should see their profits drop this year by 78 percent over 2010 due to the sharp rise in crude oil and jet fuel prices, unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, and the earthquake and resulting nuclear disasters in Japan, officials of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Geneva reported today. "That we are making any money at all in a year with this combination of unprecedented shocks is a result of a very fragile balance," explains Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and chief executive officer.

General aviation flight information to be made more public

WASHINGTON, 30 May 2011. Federal aviation officials announced that they make flight plans and other general aviation information available to the public on-line. FAA officials will affect the change 60 days after the Federal Register is published.

Business aviation flight training contracts in Europe won by CAE

MONTREAL, Canada, 24 May 2011. Six European business aviation operators have signed up with CAE for flight training at the company's training centers in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. The five operators are ABS Jets in the Czech Republic; Carre Aviation in Malta; Cukurova Aviation out of Turkey; International Jet Management from Austria;  and Ocean Sky, and  VistaJet, -- both based in England.

iPod touch/iPhone remote control for cabin systems introduced by Rockwell Collins

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, 14 May 11 2011. Rockwell Collins engineers announced a new iTunes App Store application that enables the Apple iPhone or an iPod touch to function as a full, two-way remote for Rockwell Collins' Venue cabin management system (CMS). The free app -- called CabinRemote -- is available for both forward-fit and aftermarket aircraft equipped with Venue.

Tecom uses hi-rel connectors from Harwin for avionics and IFE systems

SALEM, N.H. 26 April 2011. Tecom Industries in Thousand Oaks, Calif., selected Datamate J-Tek connectors from Harwin in Salem, N.H., for their antenna systems used in commercial avionics and in-flight entertainment. Tecom will also use the connectors for military aircraft systems.

Rising fuel prices keep European expectations in check as global commercial avionics market recovers

LONDON, 21 April 2011. A robust commercial avionics market is still expected to return in the 2014 time frame, say analysts at Frost & Sullivan in London, but in the meantime rising fuel prices are showing no sign of stabilizing and frustrating European airlines -- such as Lufthansa, AF-KLM, and British Airways-Iberia -- that had seen a recent increase in profit and traffic.

Electrically-powered concept aircraft from Airbus makes debut

TOULOUSE, France, 20 April 2011. Officials at Airbus unveiled a new concept electric-aircraft as an example of energy-efficient technologies for commercial aviation. This technology demonstrator -- called the eGenius -- is an electrically powered two-seat airplane being used to examine the long-term potential of electricity as a major onboard energy source for air transport.

IATA officials say February air passenger traffic was slowed due to political turmoil

GENEVA, Switzerland, 5 April 2011. Officials at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data on international air passenger traffic and cargo traffic for the month of February 2011 that showed increases compared to February 2010, but a drop compared to January this year.
