The use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology brings many performance advantages to designers of commercial and military avionics and electronics systems but not without one big headache -- obsolescence. It affects all levels of design -- as parts become obsolete designers struggle to manage the life cycle costs associated with COTS products that have a two-year shelf life in systems lasting decades.

Cockpit switch lighting to be upgraded by Gulfstream

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to retrofit Gulfstream IV, GIV-SP, and GV aircraft cockpits with light-emitting diode (LED) lamps via two Gulfstream aircraft service changes (ASCs). The LED lamps were developed by Gulfstream engineers and suppliers to replace as many as 700 incandescent bulbs throughout the cockpit, depending on each aircraft and its configuration.

Maintenance, repair, and overhaul agreement signed by Boeing, Netherlands Ministry of Defense

WOENSDRECHT, Netherlands, 9 Nov. 2010. Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the Netherlands Ministry of Defense Logistic Center Woensdrecht entered a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) framework agreement to expand the center's capabilities and develop opportunities for Dutch industry. The alliance is aimed at ensuring the readiness of CH-47 Chinook and AH-64D Apache helicopters operated by the Royal Netherlands air force, as well as broadening regional MRO activities through support of other military and civilian aircraft.

Air traffic control system engineering contract won by ManTech for Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division

FAIRFAX, Va., 9 Nov. 2010. ManTech International Corp. (NASDAQ:MANT) won a $24 million contract with the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD). The contract, which is a follow on to ManTech's engineering and technical services in support of combat identification and air traffic control systems, has a one-year period of performance with four, one-year option periods.

WAAS LPV from Universal Avionics installed on Falcon 2000 aircraft

Universal Avionics authorized dealer Jet Aviation St. Louis (formerly Midcoast Aviation) completed the first Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) flight management system (FMS) installation in a Dassault Falcon 2000 aircraft. The installation replaced existing Universal Avionics FMSs with dual UNS-1Ew WAAS/SBAS-FMS and includes approval for Localizer Performance with Vertical (LPV) approach capabilities.

Apache night vision sensor modernization contract won by Lockheed Martin

Teledyne Controls DFDAU part of Boeing’s airplane health management solution for Next-Generation 737 aircraft

Teledyne Controls announced that Boeing will use Teledyne's Digital Flight Data Acquisition Unit (DFDAU) as a key component in Boeing's airplane health management (AHM) system for the Next‑Generation 737 aircraft. Teledyne's DFDAU, which combines the functions of mandatory data acquisition and recording with a sophisticated aircraft condition monitoring system (ACMS), is hosting a set of custom ACMS applications designed to acquire and output data into Boeing's ground analysis tools, providing 737 operators with an advanced solution for proactive maintenance and enhanced operations.

Boeing projects $90 billion commercial airplanes market in Russia and CIS

MOSCOW, 15 Oct. 2010. Boeing [NYSE: BA] forecasts that air carriers in Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will take delivery of about 960 new airplanes over the next 20 years at an investment of $90 billion.

Aircraft maintenance training program contract for Canada's CC-130J awarded to NGRAIN by CAE

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, 13 Oct.  2010. NGRAIN won a multi-million dollar subcontract by CAE (TSX: CAE; NYSE:CAE) in Montreal to support the Maintenance Training Program (MTP) for In-Service Support of Canada's CC-130J Hercules transport aircraft developed by Lockheed Martin.

Flight data interface management unit from Teledyne Controls selected by Uzbekistan Airways

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., 30 Sept. 2010. Teledyne Controls, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Inc. (NYSE: TDY), announced that Uzbekistan Airways selected Teledyne's flight data interface management unit (FDIMU) for installation on their new Airbus A320 aircraft. Uzbekistan Airways will use Teledyne's FDIMU to perform flight data acquisition, aircraft condition monitoring, and data recording to reinforce their FDM (flight data monitoring) program.

Turboprop training center from ATR and Comair in South Africa

International turboprop manufacturer, ATR, announced the opening of its first training center in Africa in partnership with South African airline Comair. The center, to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa, will be operational in April 2011. It will be equipped with an full flight simulator and will provide training for ATR 42-300, ATR 42-500, ATR 72-200, and ATR 72-500 aircraft. The announcement was made at the Africa Aerospace & Defense Airshow in Cape Town.

Apache Longbow Crew Trainer simulators upgraded with Christie DLP/LED technology

Christie announced that Boeing [NYSE: BA] selected the Christie Matrix StIM simulation projection system for a multi-million dollar program to upgrade an initial 18 Apache Longbow Crew Trainer (LCT) simulators. To date, ten simulators have been completely retrofitted, with additional LCTs contracted throughout the year.

Russian-built avionics fly on Eurocopter Vostok EC135 helicopters

Eurocopter Vostok delivered the first EC135 T2i helicopters, part of a purchase contract for eight EC135 helicopters in passenger configuration, to Gazpromavia at Eurocopter's facility in Donauworth, Germany. This EC135 is the first Eurocopter helicopter equipped with Russian-built mission avionics, produced by Transas Aviation -- a Russian avionics manufacturer based in St. Petersburg.

Honeywell-CAE Training Alliance expands course offerings to Europe, Middle East, and Asia

MONTREAL, 13 Sept. 2010. Honeywell and CAE announced that their Honeywell-CAE Training Alliance is now offering aviation maintenance training courses for technicians in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and is also incorporating the expertise of other partners. The alliance delivers technical training at the Honeywell Aerospace Academy in Phoenix, in CAE training centers worldwide, at selected partner locations, and at customer facilities.

FAA revokes Phoenix Heliparts certificate

MESA, Ariz., 10 Sept. 2010. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has revoked the air agency certificate of Phoenix Heliparts, Inc., (PHI) of Mesa, Ariz., for allegedly performing improper repairs and deliberately falsifying maintenance records. PHI must surrender its certificate to the FAA, as required under the terms of the emergency revocation.

PSI Repair Services receives FAA FAR Part 145 Repair Station certification

LIVONIA, Mich., 9 Sept. 2010. PSI Repair Services, Inc. received a Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part145 Repair Station Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). With this certification, PSI can accept and/or solicit all aircraft electronic components for evaluation and repair covered in its FAA Repair Station Manual.
